SENIORS PSYCHOSOCIAL INTEREST GROUP (SPIG) meeting will be held AT Canadian Gerontology Association (CAG) in Quebec City, Oct 26-27, 2006. Lunch will be served. (See CAG Website www.cagacg.ca for details re exact time and cost.) CAG PROGRAM
The Seniors Psychosocial Interest Group (SPIG) , formed to promote and facilitate seniors mental health through psychosocial interventions, invites you to a luncheon to share ideas. There will be a brief presentation about the implementation of a psychosocial rehabilitation model in a community psychogeriatric facility in Victoria , B.C., providing tertiary care . Participants will be invited to share their knowledge about other models, programs, policies and advoccay that support seniors mental health .

Best Practice in Seniors’ Mental Health Program and Policy Design Project

The Population Health Fund, Public Health Agency of Canada has awarded funds to carry out a three year project September 2005 - October 2008 Best Practice in Seniors’ Mental Health Program and Policy Design, sponsored by the British Columbia Psychogeriatric Association. The aim of the project is to develop the capacity of communities across Canada to promote and support seniors’ mental health through adoption of the Seniors Mental Health Policy Lens (SMHPL) as a best practice in seniors mental health program and policy design. The Seniors Psychosocial Interest Group (SPIG) will be responsible for national dissemination and the sustainability of the project. Dr. Penny MacCourt is the principle investigator. Submission “Single Biggest Challenge to Mental Health Research”

A submission was made to the Institute Of Neurosciences, Mental Health And Addiction (INMAH), Canadian Institutes of Health Research (CIHR) in response to their RFP “Unique Challenges In Mental Health And Addiction Research: The Next Ten Years” . In this brief we identified what we believe is the single biggest challenge to mental health research. The submission was made on behalf of the Seniors Psychosocial Interest Group (SPIG) , the British Columbia Psychogeriatric Association (BCPGA) , and the Centre on Aging, University of Victoria. Submission to the Kirby Senate Committee on Mental Health

enny MacCourt was asked to be a witness at the Standing Senate Committee on Social Affairs, Science and Technology's Study on Mental Health Issues Round Table Meeting on Senior’s Mental Health . Seniors’ Mental Health Psychosocial Research Agenda for Canada

A research agenda related to older adults’ mental health that promotes psychosocial research and its’ integration with biomedical research. This was initiated at a symposium with clinicians, researchers, policy makers and representatives from all sectors across Canada, funded by CIHR and Population Health Fund. The research agenda has received input since then from many people in our field.
